5 Most Common Methods of Tooth Repair

There are many different ways to damage your teeth, which is why it’s a fairly common occurrence. No matter whether you chip a tooth while playing a game of catch (or biting your nails) or if your dentist finds a cavity during a routine dental appointment, your Salt Lake City dentist can usually repair your teeth with one of the following methods.

Fillings

Fillings are one of the most common forms of tooth repair. Fillings are used to treat cavities. First, the dentist will remove the part of your tooth that has decayed, and then fill it with composite, amalgam, or porcelain. Porcelain and composite fillings blend well with your teeth and match their natural color.

However, fillings are used to treat more than just cavities. If your teeth are cracked or broken, your dentist may use fillings to repair the damaged teeth.

Bonding

Composite bonding is used to repair chipped, decayed, or broken teeth. Dentists use this process to make your teeth look healthy and strong again.

After preparing your teeth for the procedure, dentists apply a putty-like composite substance to the affected tooth’s surface. Your dentist can select a composite that matches your tooth color. They then mold and smooth the putty. After drying the bonding, your dentist will shape and polish the bonding to look natural.

Crowns

Crowns are used to protect a damaged tooth while restoring your smile and bite. They are also called caps because they fit over your cracked or chipped tooth. Crowns are considered a permanent tooth covering and come in a variety of materials including gold, porcelain, and porcelain-covered metal.

Dental crowns are custom-created to fit over your tooth and provide protection and a beautiful smile for years to come.

Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace any missing teeth. Many people do not realize that missing teeth cause more than strictly aesthetic problems. Over time, your teeth can start to shift, which can lead to bite and jaw issues, speech impediments, and even tooth decay.

Bridges create a natural looking smile using a pontic, which is a tooth created in the lab. Your dentist will apply crowns on either side of the missing tooth to help hold the pontic in place.

Dental Implants

Usually, your dentist can repair your teeth through one of the methods mentioned above. However, if your tooth is damaged beyond the point of repair, a dental implant may be your best option. In this case, the tooth is pulled and a titanium screw is put into your jaw bone. After the bone fuses with the screw, your dentist can create a crown in place of your old tooth.
